Sail Training Association
Sir Winston Churchill The STA Mission

"The STA is dedicated to enhancing the personal development of young people between 16 and 24 by providing them with the challenging experience of participating as a crew in a Tall Ship on the high seas.

The aim of the STA is to provide young people with a challenging and rewarding offshore sailing experience. This is achieved by giving them the opportunity to be part of the crew of a large sailing vessel, where they have to live in close proximity with others, share facilities and learn to work as a team to operate the complicated array of sails and rigging."

Flying the flag "The STA seeks to achieve:
  • A physical and psychological challenge
  • Team participation in exacting conditions
  • Self-awareness of leadership skills and teamwork
  • Teamwork between young people from different backgrounds
  • A sense of achievement and increased self-confidence

By breaking the pattern of the individual's conventional behaviour and encouraging team participation and interaction under challenging and sometimes arduous conditions, the individual is able to discover new strengths and levels of mutual and self-respect.

The STA encourages young people to participate in the annual Cutty Sark Tall Ships Races which bring together young people from Europe and the rest of the world. In this truly international gathering a fleet of tall ships race each year between different European ports.

The STA also operates two large sailing vessels, the three masted Topsail Schooners SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL and MALCOLM MILLER. The ships operate in European waters during the Spring, Summer and Autumn and in the Canaries and Azores in the Winter providing the "Tall Ships Experience" for both young men and women from the Untied Kingdom and the rest of Europe."

The above quotes are from literature provided by the Sail Training Association. The official STA web site can be found at http://www.tallships.org/.

In addition to the voyages arranged for young people the STA also take older people. In May 1999 I was a member of one such voyage and I have compiled a photographic record of my experiences. This record is primarily intended for the benefit of the friends that I made during that voyage, but others interested in sailing on one of the schooners should feel free to browse at their leisure.
